Law Enforcement Records Request

Thank you for visiting the Barron County Sheriff’s Department Public Record Request page. To submit a new request, please click the New Request link and complete the form as instructed. If you have any questions, please call the records division at (715) 637-6725.

This section is for records of the Barron County Sheriff’s Department only. We do not provide records from other law enforcement agencies.

Please note that we will NOT release records of an open or pending investigation. Furthermore, personal identification information and confidential information shall be redacted in the copies you receive in accordance to State and Federal laws. Because of the requirement to redact information, there may be a delay in releasing the report. If you require all information excluded by redaction, you must obtain a court order signed by a Judge or Court Commissioner ordering the release of the excluded information.

Also note that you are not required to identify yourself when making an open records request, however there are state laws that may prevent the release of information if the identity of the requestor is not known, Wis. Stat. § 19.32(3) and 19.35(1)(am).

According to Wisconsin law, an authority is not required to create a new record by extracting and compiling information from existing records. See Wis. Stat. § 19.35(1)(L). See also George v. Record Custodian, 169 Wis. 2d 573, 579, 485 N.W.2d 460, 462 (Ct. App. 1992). According to Wis. Stat. § 19.35 (3) a fee for reproduction of records may be established. The Barron County Sheriff’s Department’s rate for reproduction of paper records is $.25 per page. Digital records such as audio and video recordings are subject to different fees, especially where redaction is required. Click here for a current list of fees.

Records pertaining to a juvenile can only be picked up in person by a parent or legal guardian, and you must provide identification and guardianship documents (if applicable).
