Education
Information and Education
Department staff is available to give talks on conservation topics to school and civic groups throughout the year. We aid farmers in developing conservation plans and Nutrient Management Plans.
Youth Speaking Contests
Each spring, Barron County SWCD sponsors a speaking contest on conservation topics for fifth through twelfth graders, comprising three divisions: Elementary, Junior and Senior. Informational packets are sent to area schools containing entry forms, rules, references and possible topics. This gives students an opportunity to improve their speaking skills while learning about our environment. The top three contestants in each division are recognized with a trophy and all contestants receive books about conservation and a Grand Prize Poster tee shirt. Division winners will go on to the Area Speaking Contest and, if they win, the State Speaking Contest.
Youth Poster Contests
We conduct a poster contest for grade school and High school students to determine participants in regional and state competition.
Sixth Grade Conservation Tour
This annual tour, held each October, looks at the many aspects of the natural resources of the county.
