Radon
Radon is a colorless and odorless gas that is present in almost all soil types. Radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, and is estimated to be responsible for 22,000 deaths each year. Radon is leaked from the ground into homes, usually into a lower level such as a basement, where it can accumulate to dangerous levels.
Midwestern states have the greatest number of homes with elevated radon. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Wisconsin Department of Health & Family Services recommend every home be tested for radon.
Radon testing is very simple and inexpensive. Do it yourself kits can be purchased at the Barron County Government Center. There are two types of kits that are used to detect radon in the house. A short term kit is placed in the house, usually the lowest level, and left for two days. A long term kit is also usually placed in the lower level of a home but is left for 90 to 365 days.
If a high level of radon is detected in your home, a radon mitigation system is the best way to reduce the radon concentrations. These systems are effective at reducing the levels of radon in the home, and usually cost about $1400 to $1700.
